This guide is for Cairns drivers, tradies and small fleet owners who want an auto electrician to come to them rather than tow a car to a workshop. It covers which jobs a mobile service can usually handle, how distance from the Northern Beaches to Gordonvale and up to the Tablelands affects your booking, what to ask before anyone turns up, and how to protect yourself with a proper quote.

A mobile auto electrician carries a van full of test gear, common parts and hand tools. That makes them a good fit for faults that can be found and fixed in an hour or two on a driveway, at a job site or in a car park. A car that won't start in the morning is the classic call-out.
Some work still needs a workshop. Jobs that need a hoist, a long run of new wiring through the body, or the dash pulled apart are usually done better under a roof with good lighting. Ask early whether your job suits a driveway, so you don't pay a call-out fee only to be told to book in somewhere else.
- Usually fine on site: battery testing and replacement, alternator and starter motor checks, blown fuses, failed globes, reading fault codes, and many accessory installs such as reversing cameras or USB sockets.
- Often better in a workshop: full rewires, intermittent faults that need a long road test, major dash or loom work, and anything on a car that can't be safely driven or parked level.
- Licensed work only: high-voltage hybrid and EV systems, airbags, refrigerant work and fixed 240V wiring must be done by a professional who holds the right licence for that work.
Distance, call-out areas and the Cairns spread
Greater Cairns is long and thin. It stretches from the beach suburbs along the Captain Cook Highway in the north, through the city and the industrial streets of Portsmith, down the Bruce Highway past Edmonton to Gordonvale in the south. Smithfield alone sits about 15 km north of the city centre, so travel time is a real part of any mobile booking.
When you ring around, say exactly where the car is. Some mobile services work mainly one end of town and charge more, or book you later, for the other end. If you live on the Northern Beaches or out at Gordonvale, ask whether your suburb is inside their normal area.
The Tablelands are a separate trip. Getting to Mareeba means climbing the Kuranda Range Road, and Atherton is usually reached over the Gillies Highway from Gordonvale. If your car is broken down on the Tablelands, it often makes sense to look for someone based up there rather than paying for a technician to drive up the range.

Questions to ask before you book
A short phone call saves a lot of hassle later. Our national guide on choosing an auto electrician covers the general points. For a mobile booking in Cairns, these questions are worth asking:
- Do you charge a call-out fee, and does it change for my suburb?
- Is the first half hour of diagnosis included, or charged separately?
- Do you carry the likely parts for my make and model, or will you need to come back?
- Do you have a scan tool that can talk to my vehicle's modules, not just read basic engine codes?
- Are you insured for work at a private home or a work site?
- For air con jobs, does the person doing the work hold the licence needed to handle refrigerant?
Describe the fault clearly
A clear description helps the technician bring the right gear and gives you a better first quote. Before you call, write down what happens, when it started and anything that changed recently, such as a new battery, a wash, a drive through deep water or new accessories.
Note any warning lights and when they come on. A red battery light while driving points somewhere different from a car that is simply dead in the morning. Take a photo of the dash with the lights showing. Our guide to dashboard warning lights explains what the common symbols mean.
- Does the fault happen all the time, or only when it's hot, wet or after the car has sat for a few days?
- Did it start after rain, a car wash or a trip to the beach?
- Is anything else on the car playing up at the same time?
Quotes, approvals and your rights in Queensland
The Queensland Government's Office of Fair Trading has a page on getting your car repaired. At the time of writing it suggested getting at least two written quotes, asking whether there's a charge for the inspection, approving all work including anything outside the quote, and asking for an itemised account before you pay. It also explains how to make a complaint if things go wrong.
Electrical faults can be hard to price before they're found, so many auto electricians quote diagnosis time first and then give a firm price for the repair. That's normal. What matters is that you agree to each stage before it's done. Our guide on what auto electricians charge explains how call-outs, hourly rates and parts usually add up.
Weather, shade and a safe place to work
Cairns weather shapes mobile work. The wet season brings heavy downpours and storms, and an open bonnet in a storm is no place for electrical testing. During the wet, try to book morning jobs, and have a carport, garage or covered car park ready if you can.
In the hotter months, shade matters too. A car sitting in full sun heats up fast, and so does the technician working on it. A level, hard surface clear of traffic is best. If your car has stopped on the side of a busy road, get yourself safe first and ask about a tow to a safer spot.
Tell the technician about anything that could make the site unsafe, such as a steep driveway, loose dogs or a ute loaded with gear. It helps them plan and keeps everyone safe.
Small checks you can do first
Some faults are simple enough to check before you pay for a call-out. A blown fuse can kill a cigarette lighter socket, a radio or a set of power windows. If you're comfortable doing it, our guide on checking and replacing a fuse shows you how. Always use a fuse of the same rating.
If a new fuse blows straight away, stop there. That means there is a short somewhere, and it needs proper diagnosis. The same goes for any burning smell, smoke or melted plastic. Switch off, get clear of the car and call a professional.

Questions Cairns drivers ask
Can a mobile auto electrician fix my car at home in Cairns?
Often, yes. Battery, alternator and starter faults, blown fuses, failed globes, fault code reading and many accessory installs can usually be done on a driveway. Bigger jobs, such as rewires or faults that need the dash removed or a long road test, are often better done in a workshop. Describe the fault clearly when you call and ask whether it suits a mobile visit.
Will a mobile auto electrician come out to the Tablelands?
Some will, but it's a long drive up the range from Cairns, so expect a bigger call-out charge or a later booking. If your car is in Mareeba, Atherton or nearby, it often makes more sense to look for a service based on the Tablelands. Either way, give your exact location when you ring so you get an accurate answer.
Should I get a written quote for auto electrical work?
Yes. The Queensland Office of Fair Trading suggests getting written quotes, approving all work before it's done and asking for an itemised account. With electrical faults, many technicians charge for diagnosis first and then quote the repair once they've found the cause. Agree to each step before work starts so there are no surprises on the bill.
What's the best time to book a mobile auto electrician in the wet season?
Mornings are usually best, because storms often build later in the day during the Cairns wet season and testing electrics in heavy rain isn't safe. If you can, have the car under a carport or in a garage. Book non-urgent jobs early, before the wet season starts, when it's easier to get a time that suits you.
