Northern Beaches

The Northern Beaches run up the Captain Cook Highway from Smithfield, with its university, shopping centres and the turn-off to Kuranda, through beachside Trinity Beach to resort-lined Palm Cove. The work mixes student and family cars, Tablelands-bound towing rigs and vehicles that live in salt air.

Suburbs in Northern Beaches

North of the airport, the Captain Cook Highway links a string of beach suburbs to Smithfield, the area's business centre. Smithfield is home to the James Cook University Cairns campus and the junction where the Kennedy Highway climbs the Kuranda Range to the Tablelands. Trinity Beach is a settled residential suburb between the Coral Sea and the Macalister Range, and Palm Cove is a resort village with one main road in and out. Salt air, summer floods and range driving all affect vehicles here, but each suburb meets them differently.

Common auto electrical jobs in Northern Beaches

Sea air, wet season flooding and the climb to the Tablelands account for a large share of the auto electrical work on the Northern Beaches.

Living with salt air

Homes along the beaches are close enough to the Coral Sea that salt settles on everything, cars included. It works into battery terminals, earth points, trailer plugs and door lock mechanisms, especially on cars parked outdoors. Corrosion often shows up as a slow start, flickering lights or a remote that works only some of the time. Regular cleaning and a protective coating on exposed terminals go a long way. See how to clean corroded battery terminals for the method.

Flood and water damage

In December 2023, rain linked to Cyclone Jasper flooded parts of the Northern Beaches, and Trinity Beach was among the suburbs hit hard. Water that reaches a car's floor or engine bay can soak connectors, modules and looms, and faults sometimes appear weeks later as corrosion sets in. If a car has been in floodwater, don't try to start it until it has been checked. Disconnecting the battery early can limit the damage.

Towing up the Kuranda Range

From Smithfield, the Kennedy Highway climbs the Kuranda Range on the way to Mareeba and the Tablelands. Caravans, camper trailers and horse floats need brakes that work properly on the descent as well as the climb. A correctly set electric brake controller is essential for heavier trailers, and working lights matter on a winding road in rain. Our guide how to install an electric brake controller explains the basics.

Batteries in beach heat

Cars on the Northern Beaches face the same tropical heat as the city, plus long periods of sitting for holiday homes and student cars over semester breaks. Heat wears batteries out from the inside, and long rests let them discharge. The combination means many batteries here fail suddenly rather than slowly. A battery test at each service shows when a replacement is due. Our guide on car battery types explained helps you choose the right type.
